Fires in truck and buildings

An Oamaru house received fire and smoke damage, a Kurow shop, used as a residence, suffered minor damage and a stock truck cab was destroyed at Hakataramea Station in three separate incidents yesterday.

Units from the Kurow and Duntroon Fire Brigades, along with six firefighters, had difficulties getting to the fire in the false ceiling of the Kurow shop because of the amount of junk there, after they were called by the owner about 11.30am.

Deputy chief fire officer Richard Nehoff said it took about an hour and a-half to put out the fire.

The Oamaru Fire Brigade sent two units and 10 firefighters about 10am yesterday to a Roach St house, in south Oamaru, where a fire had started around the back porch and spread into a toilet, bathroom and hallway.

Four firefighters used breathing apparatus to fight the fire and rescue a rottweiler dog cowering unharmed under a bed.

It took about 20 minutes to control the fire and three hours to dampen hot spots.

The house was being rented by a group of young people, who were absent, Oamaru chief fire officer Gary Gibson said.

The Kurow fire unit and two tankers were called to a truck fire on Hakataramea Station at 1pm, when the driver reported a bang and fire erupting in the cab.

The driver was unhurt.
