Fire trickyto access

Waitaki rural firefighters spent about five hours fighting a scrub fire at the confluence of the Otekaieke and Waitaki Rivers on Monday night and early yesterday.

Waitaki emergency services manager Chris Raine said about 9pm on Monday, the Kurow and Duntroon volunteer brigades were called out to the fire about 9pm but could not get access from State Highway 83 to where gorse and scrub was burning.

Waitaki Rural Fire was then called out with its four-wheel-drive units and had the blaze under control by about 2am.

Mr Raine said the fire covered a "moderate" area.

The fire was handed over to the Department of Conservation, which controls the land. The cause was not known.
