Fines introduced for littering

Litterbugs in Twizel will now face financial penalties, with the Mackenzie District Council deciding to introduce instant fines for littering.

The council aims to control littering, and the Twizel community had pushed for the introduction of the fines.

Yesterday, the council decided to implement provisions in the Litter Act which will allow it to issue infringement notices for littering, with fines ranging between $50 and $200.

Chief executive Glen Innes said the council had in past taken a reactive approach to littering, focusing more on cleaning up rather than penalising offenders.

The ability to issue infringement notices would change that, Mr Innes said.

He believed the notices would be a low-cost way of deterring littering.

A Twizel resident had offered to act as a voluntary warden.
