After a devastating fire destroyed their house and all their belongings, a Waitaki Valley family are on the mend.

The house Ronel and Hazel Barrientos lived in with their four children was burned to the ground last week.

The family of six have been staying at the Kurow Motel since.

After the initial shock of the fire, the family was "doing better", Mr Barrientos said.

"We’re OK now."

The family had recently moved from one farm to another and had been in their new house for only three nights before the fire, Mr Barrientos said.

A Givealittle page had been set up to help them and had raised almost $3500 already.

The support they had received from the Waitaki community had been "a blessing", Mr Barrientos said.

"I can feel the love of God that people are loving us.

"You don’t feel that you are alone. They are sympathising [with] what you feel."

He has been fielding calls all day every day from people wanting to help them.

"Lots of people have been giving to us from all [ethnicities], not just Filipino.

"People here in New Zealand are really good."

Ashes and dust are all that remain of the house the Barrientos family were living in.

They have received many donations including farming clothes, a washing machine and furniture.

The money from the Givealittle page will mostly go towards the family travelling to Wellington to renew their passports and documents at the Philippines embassy.

Mr and Mrs Barrientos have been farming in the Waitaki for more than a decade.

The morning of the fire, the couple were out feeding cows when they received a call from Mr Barrientos’ brother, who also works on the farm.

"He called me and asked ‘are you burning something in your house? There is dark smoke’. I said ‘No. We are in the hills. We are already working’. He checked it and told me, ‘yeah, your house is burning’."

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire at the property on State Highway 82 on the north side of the Waitaki River shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

By the time they arrived on the scene, the house was almost entirely engulfed in flames, so the firefighters worked to protect the garage and woodshed nearby.

Everything was destroyed in the fire and the family was left with nothing but what they had on them when they left the house earlier that morning.

The cause of the fire is undetermined due to the extent of the damage. However, it was not being treated as suspicious, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.

The investigation was closed, but Fenz would be providing support to the family, he said.

Thankfully, the owners of the farm had a spare house the family hoped to move into within the next fortnight, Mr Barrientos said.

If you would like to donate to the family, you can do so via the Givealittle page at www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/fire-burned-their-home-help-needed.
