An art exhibition to promote a "better life" for people with intellectual disabilities will be held at The Loan & Merc next Friday.

The North Otago IHC Association art exhibition will feature about 30 to 40 pieces of art by people with special needs.

IHC patron and special guest Dame Denise L’Estrange-Corbet will host the free event.

North Otago IHC chairman Chris Rawson said there was some "great work" in the show.

"There are some very good pieces including painting, sculptures and models that will be on display.

"It’s a good chance for people to show what they can do," he said.

Mr Rawson said the North Otago IHC Association "is passionate about enabling good lives for our people".

"The art exhibition gives people an opportunity to get involved with different things.

"It enables them a better life and different experiences.

"A lot of them are painting all year round," he said.

Mr Rawson said Dame Denise was one of the "main drivers of the art awards" as the national patron of IHC.

Some of the North Otago artworks will go to the National IHC exhibition in Wellington that runs this month and next.

The North Otago exhibition will also have a silent auction on selected art and the event will include a light supper.

All proceeds from the event go to the North Otago Special Olympics.

Doors open at 5.30pm on Friday, April 11.
