Sirens are being installed at Shag Point to warn of emergencies and fires.
Installed by New Zealand Fire Service technicians this week, the four sirens are mounted on two poles at the western and eastern end of the settlement.
The sirens will be activated by the fire service from its communications centre in Christchurch in the event of a vegetation or forest fire emergency.
Shag Point residents have an evacuation plan drawn up by the Waitaki District Council rural fire authority, the Department of Conservation and residents.
The plan was put in place last year after a risk analysis indicated the forest area behind the village was a significant fire risk to the residents, Waitaki's emergency service manager, Chris Raine, said.
Once the sirens are commissioned, the fire service and Waitaki Rural Fire will meet residents to explain how the sirens will operate.
"This will ensure that during a future emergency the safety of the Shag Point community can be assured," Mr Raine said.
