A 73-year-old Oamaru man lost control of his car yesterday just after 2.30pm when he had a medical emergency.

The car narrowly missed a tree as it left Thames St where it joins Thames Highway (background), left tyre track marks (right) across Orana Park without appearing to brake and was extensively damaged when it hit a tree.

The tree stopped it from ploughing through a fence into a motel complex.

The man was taken to Oamaru Hospital with cuts and bruises and admitted for treatment.

He was wearing a seatbelt and the car's airbag activated.
