The main road leading into Moeraki is again on the Waitaki District Council's agenda.
Although the council has already decided to fix the troublesome road, some councillors want to revisit technical aspects of the project, a move which has the support of Waihemo Community Board chairman Rod Philip.
His board has supported starting work on the $630,000 drainage and road works on Haven St in an attempt to resolve a problem that has existed for decades.
That will attract a 57% subsidy from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
At present, the council is consulting affected landowners and finalising the design.
Physical work is not expected to start this financial year.
The road has been moving by as much as 220mm a year.
Moeraki's only main entrance from SH1 is two lanes of seal, but other sections are shingled, rough narrow portions where there are constantly moving slips.
Last year, the council decided to go ahead with that project, even though roading assets manager Geoff Young said there was a high degree of risk and uncertainty about the outcome.
At a council committee meeting earlier this week, some councillors who recently inspected the proposed work started to raise doubts.
Cr Struan Munro wanted the project revisited and assets committee chairman Alistair Mavor expressed similar views.
Cr Mavor suggested a meeting of some councillors who had concerns to discuss the project.
"It needs some discussion before we go ahead," he said.
The issue appears to have more to do with some engineering and technical aspects, rather than cancelling the project.
Mr Philip said yesterday some Moeraki residents supported the work, others did not.
However, most agreed something needed to be done.
"If they [councillors] want to have another look, so be it, so long as the project moves forward," he said.
Assets manager Neil Jorgensen said the proposed work was "technically robust" for the money the council was spending.
If the council wanted to change its mind about the project, staff needed to know very soon.
