What will happen to the historic Craig Fountain in the Oamaru Gardens has yet to be decided by the Waitaki District Council, with a new report to be prepared on the structure which is in a state of disrepair.
Councillors deferred a decision on whether the fountain would be dismantled and repaired or reinstated with no expectation it be a working fountain.
Staff believed a $20,000 bequest could be used to dismantle the fountain to find out what was needed to restore it, which could cost $60,000 to $100,000. However, some councillors were reluctant to sanction the dismantling the fountain in case it could not be reinstated.
The fountain was donated by timber merchant John Craig in 1912.
