Council to meet on Tuesdays

The Waitaki District Council is to hold its meetings on Tuesdays, the decision being made yesterday without debate.

The issue caused some confusion when it was first debated at the inaugural meeting of the new council in October, when Tuesdays were recommended, but Cr Kathy Dennison wanted meetings to remain on Wednesdays because of previous commitments.

The council and committees had met on Tuesdays, but changed that to Wednesdays at former deputy mayor Gary Kircher's request when he was appointed to the Community Trust of Otago, which also met on Tuesdays.

Yesterday, the council approved a six-week roster of meetings, the Waihemo and Ahuriri Community Boards meeting in the first week on Mondays and Tuesdays respectively, the council's committee of the whole in the third week and council the sixth week.

Other meetings may be held outside that schedule, which starts next year, if required.

The council has appointed deputy mayor Jim Hopkins as chairman of the committee of the whole, with Cr Dennison his deputy.
