At a meeting of the full council last Tuesday, councillors voted in favour of proposed changes to the speed limits of more than 20 roads, subject to any further roads being identified during the initial consultation period between April 8 and May 3.
Once that consultation is completed, a full proposal will be prepared before a second and final round of consultation.
In December, the council commissioned Santec Inc to conduct a district-wide review of speed limits in Waitaki, after numerous requests dating back to 2013.
A total of 37 roads were initially reviewed and it was recommended that speed limits be changed on 18 and retained on 19.
A further two roads were added in early March, as was the area around the town's Victorian precinct and Harbour St.
In a statement, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said roads in Waitaki "covered the spectrum" of road types and the speed of drivers was an "ever present" safety issue.
He said the review was carried out with the aim of ensuring driver safety and where speed limits were no longer practical, they were looked at to "ensure they were appropriate".
Any new roads recommended for review during the consultation period will be reviewed by council and may be included during the second round of consultation.
Consultation forms are available on the council's website.
