Confrontation on street

A confrontation in a group of young people on Palmerston's main street last Friday afternoon ended in the arrest of two 15-year-old Palmerston girls.

Police from Oamaru were called to assist, Constable Stefan Witehira, of Palmerston, said. One girl was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence. She was referred to youth aid.

The second girl, charged with assault, will appear in the Dunedin Youth Court tomorrow. As a result of the same incident, a 38-year-old woman is assisting police with their inquiries.

Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact the Palmerston police. Const Witehira said some young people went to the police station to alert police to the unfolding incident.

Palmerston youth should not be judged by the behaviour of a few, he said. Also on Friday night, offenders broke into the East Otago Four Square supermarket in the Palmerston town centre.

An unknown quantity of cigarettes was taken.
