Community looking for replacement doctor

The Omarama community has lost its doctor service, but is looking for a replacement.

The service had been provided for several years by the Kurow doctor, but that is no longer available.

Initially, that was available one day a week, then one day a fortnight and, latterly, one day a month.

Ahuriri Community Board chairman Craig Dawson said yesterday the community was hoping to attract a former Omarama woman who was completing her qualification as a district practitioner nurse. She would be supported by a doctor from Oamaru as a mentor.

Mr Dawson said providing a new medical service would be one of the issues to be discussed at a public meeting in Omarama on August 29.

With public support, there was a possibility of funding for the nurse's position.

The meeting would also discuss forming an Omarama Ratepayers' Association and redevelopment of the hall.

One proposal was to include two consulting rooms in the hall, which would be turned into a community centre.

Mr Dawson said that Omarama was not totally left without medical cover.

It had the first response unit of the Omarama Fire Brigade with trained paramedics and St John ambulances at Kurow and Twizel for medical emergencies, as well as doctors at Twizel.
