Club to mark 125 years

Excelsior Rugby Club plans major celebrations to mark its 125th anniversary at Queen's Birthday weekend, sending out registration forms to former members.

One of the celebration's organisers, Stuart Renalson, said the club was formed in March 1888.

It played its first games in a paddock on the corner of Orwell and Thames Sts, then at other venues, including the Showgrounds, before it built a clubhouse and facilities at Centennial Park in the 1960s.

At one stage, it used Takaro Park in central Oamaru for practices. Players changed in an old morgue, where the Meek St car park is now.

Mr Renalson said the club was looking for any Excelsior photographs that may be available for display at the weekend, or any club archives and memorabilia.

The celebrations will start on the night of Friday, May 31, with a get-together at Centennial Park.

On Saturday, June 1, will be decade photographs, and watching the club premier team play in the Citizens Shield, followed by the anniversary dinner and an auction of jerseys and other memorabilia.

A farewell and barbecue will be held on Sunday, June 2.
