"A classroom without walls" is how Gloria Hurst describes a mentoring programme for school pupils at the Waitaki Community Gardens.

The programme began yesterday, with four keen pupils from Oamaru North School spending time at the gardens which overlook Chelmer St and the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park.

"We're taking it step by step, learning as we go," Mrs Hurst, who is one of the mentors, said.

It was based on the three R's - respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment.

"It's a lovely concept," she said.
