Oamaru's Columba Presbyterian Church management board is awaiting engineering reports on earthquake-proofing the church building, where the final service was held in April last year.

In September 2015, the church's congregation voted to dissolve as a group.

Ownership of, and responsibility for the church property that served its community for 135 years was transferred to the Southern Presbytery and Synod of Otago and Southland.

Parish spokesman Bob Avis said not much was happening concerning the church building and surrounds, located at the intersection of Wansbeck St and Ure St. At least two religious groups had shown interest in renting the space, but the church group was not interested in becoming landlords.

He believed if the church could get an idea of how much earthquake-proofing would cost, it could speed up a resolution.

``We would like it to stay as a church, but realise that might not be practical.''

Southern Presbytery executive officer Alan Judge said he was not expecting any decisions soon about the sale or retention of the building.
