Centennial Park in Oamaru could be turned into a "campervan village" during the Rugby World Cup under a venture proposed by the North Otago Rugby Union.
The Waitaki District Council is being asked to give approval at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to turn the sports complex into a campervan site for 30 days which could accommodate up to 150 campervans and 525 people. The campervan park is already operating, with a sign on State Highway 1 and campervans parked there yesterday.
Written approval from the council is needed under the Resource Management Act.
Council policy planner Richard Sutherland said the village was one of a number of proposals to help the district benefit from thousands of extra visitors to New Zealand during the cup.
The union was also holding the Golden Oldies rugby tournament and the Bog Rocks Musicfest at Centennial Park from September 30 to October 2.
To support the campervan village, an office would be placed on the site and operated 24 hours a day to provide security.
A marquee would be erected as a communal meeting place where entertainment, food and liquor would be provided.
Facilities at the Marist Athletic Rugby Club, Excelsior Rugby Club and Whitestone Contracting Stadium would be utilised, along with six portaloos on site.
The site will be fenced off and vehicular traffic controlled through one entry-exit point.
Mr Sutherland said the site was designated for recreational purposes under the Waitaki district plan, therefore approval was needed for any activity which fell outside the definition of recreation.
