The last part of the Waitaki District Council upgrade of the Maheno Bridge on Kakanui Valley Rd is scheduled to start on April 19 and is expected to take six weeks.
The final part of the $130,000 project started last year was to replace the bridge’s transoms.
The transoms supported the concrete deck and would be fitted by a specialised bridge team.
Council’s network operations engineer Mark Renalson said there was a real sense of achievement among the team who worked on the bridge project.
"We extended the life of the bridge beyond the life it would have had because of this work. We avoided the larger cost of replacing it."
He was urging motorists who use the route to factor time delays into their journeys while the bridge upgrade was under way.
He said the bridge would be closed during the daytime from 8am to 6pm daily, except for weekends, and during those times an alternative route would be signposted.
