Ban sought for Omarama

A temporary liquor ban could be imposed in Omarama this festive season.

During its deliberations into the review of the Waitaki Liquor Ban Bylaw, the council considered a submission from Ahuriri Community Board chairman Craig Dawson requesting a trial "boundary to boundary" liquor ban for Omarama from December 26 to January 2.

If granted, the liquor ban would be signposted at the 50kmh speed restriction signs on State Highways 8 and 83.

Rubbish bins would also be put there for people to get rid of "empties", which would save the cost of collecting bottles strewn around the town after New Year's Eve and other holiday events, Mr Dawson said.

In Oamaru and Wanaka, drinking establishments warned people not to leave their premises with bottles and glasses which had helped limit the amount of broken glass around the towns.

Mr Dawson said he had received many positive comments about the possibility of a temporary ban, but he was also sure some people would be concerned the council was taking "a moral stance". He said some submissions to the council suggested liquor bans made instant criminals of people caught breaching it.
