Average rates rise 6.6%

Waitaki district ratepayers will pay an average 6.6% more, although the increase on individual properties will vary because of changes in property values and what special rates they pay for services.

Yesterday, the Waitaki District Council formally approved its annual plan for the 2008-09 financial year, proposing to collect almost $23 million in general and special rates, $1.4 million more than the last financial year which ended yesterday.

New projects which have made an impact on rates include an upgrade of the emergency generator at the council's headquarters and areas such as water, community planning and consultation.
