Approval for the formation of a company to build, market and operate the Alps 2 Ocean cycleway has been given by the Waitaki District Council.
The council, in conjunction with the Mackenzie District Council, yesterday considered one public submission from the Duntroon Districts Association, which supported setting up the company, The 312km-long cycleway from Mt Cook to Oamaru is being built with a $2.75 million Government grant from the New Zealand Cycle Trail Fund.
Both councils felt a council-controlled organisation (company) would be the best way to manage the trail without putting ratepayers at risk.
