Between 20 and 30 aircraft will make a Dawn Raid on Oamaru Airport tomorrow, part of a traditional fixture held each year between the North Otago, Waimate, South and Mid Canterbury Aero Clubs.
The event includes competitions for aircraft, including the Landing Shield, held by Mid Canterbury.
For the first time, other pilots have been invited to join in the day.
North Otago club president Hayden Williams said that could result in up to 30 aircraft and 40-50 people at the airport, depending on the weather.
Heavy rain, the norm for North Otago during the past three weeks, will not affect landing as the grass strip can be swapped for the sealed runway at Oamaru Airport.
While the Landing Shield is restricted to pilots and aircraft from the four clubs, other competitions open to all-comers include bombing on arrival to get closest to the target, best arrival landing, best spot landing on arrival and best "forced landing".
There is also a special prize for the first to arrive. The day is expected to start at 6am, with judges on the ground waiting to judge the arrival bombing runs. Breakfast starts at 7am, followed by further competitions.
