Fenwick School's $60,000 adventure playground opened yesterday and twins Sebastian and Lance Ruehorn were celebrating.

The twins, as the school's oldest pupils out of a roll of about 275, cut a ribbon to officially open the new playground with Fenwick School board of trustees chairman Dave Roberts just before morning break.

The equipment, for senior pupils aged 8 years and upwards, was built during the school holidays and replaces a confidence course-style playground constructed in 1990 by the New Zealand Army Territorials.

Some pieces of the original playground have been retained.

The new play equipment from Playground Centre was paid for by the school's Home and School Association, Waitaki District Council, Community Trust of Otago and Youthtown, and is a joint school and community asset.

The new playground complements an adventure playground built for the junior children.

The new senior adventure playground has been designed to provide a challenge for children, with school principal Lloyd Bokser describing it as "a wonderful new facility" for the school and the wider community.
