Iona Home's eldest resident, Mavis Gubbins, was treated like royalty yesterday.

Mrs Gubbins (98) was called upon to cut the cake for the home's Royal Wedding celebration dinner and joined a display of wedding dresses which included hers from 1936, her daughter June Cameron's 1961 dress and her grand-daughter Gillian McKenzie's outfit from 1991.

Residents had been planning the celebrations for some time, including making red and blue bunting which hung from the corridors of the north Oamaru rest-home.

Underneath the bunting 35 wedding dresses hung along the main corridor, lent by residents, their families and staff.

Mrs Gubbins (nee Galbraith) married Fred Gubbins in Dunedin on December 30, 1936. Mrs Cameron (nee Gubbins) married Harry Cameron on August 26, 1961 and Mrs McKenzie (nee Cameron) married David McKenzie at Herbert Forest on January 19, 1991.

At midday, residents sat down to a Royal wedding celebration dinner, with the menu including Balmoral ham on the bone with Sweet William honey mustard sauce, a Royal roast medley, Charlie's minted peas and Katherine's lemon delicious pudding with chantilly cream.
