10-year-old crash victim home from hospital

The 10-year-old cyclist hit by a ute at Otematata last week has returned home.

The Rolleston boy, holidaying with his family at Otematata, was cycling on the wrong side of the Waitaki Dr West when he was struck by a ute at the intersection with Market Pl on Friday afternoon.

"He was biking to the park in Otematata on the wrong side of the road,'' Constable Craig Bennett, of Kurow, said.

"He was thrown in to the air, broke his tibia and fibula at the ankle and chipped his front teeth.''

He also received grazes and abrasions to his body.

The boy had earlier "narrowly missed'' being hit by a car at another intersection, Const Bennett said.

After being struck by the ute, the boy was airlifted to Timaru Hospital and held for observation before returning home to Rolleston "safe and well''.

"I've spoken to him since and he's relatively happy - he's got a good story to tell,'' Const Bennett said.

"His parents are going to make sure he has a lot better understanding of the simple road user rules.''
