Police are at the scene of a fatal crash in Balfour in Southland.
Officers were called to Queen St, near the intersection of State Highway 94, about 10am today after reports of a car submerged in a creek.
One person was believed to be dead inside the car, although inquiries were ongoing, a police spokeswoman said.
The road was closed and diversions were in place, with motorists being told to take Beck Rd.
"The serious crash unit was called out to the scene and are investigating,'' the spokeswoman said.
"A car has driven off the road into a creek.''
It was unclear what led to the crash.
