Cyclist dragged by truck

A 19-year-old cyclist who was knocked off his bike went underneath an 11-tonne truck and was dragged for about 9m in Cromwell yesterday morning.

The cyclist and truck collided at the Barry Ave-Gair Ave roundabout at 8am, when there was fog blanketing the town, Constable Doug Winter said.

The youth received chest injuries and was treated at Dunedin Hospital.

"It appears he's been knocked off his bike and went underneath the truck, got stuck and was dragged for about 9m. He was extremely lucky to come out of it without more serious injuries," Const Winter said.

The Cromwell Fire Brigade assisted at the scene and jacked up the truck so the cyclist could get out.

The accident was still being investigated, Const Winter said.
