Workers need beds

A shortage of beds for seasonal workers in Alexandra is causing headaches for Summerfruit human resources manager Martin McPherson.

He expects up to 100 workers to arrive in Alexandra early in the new year and has not been able to find any beds for them.

Workers will becoming from South America, Asia, Europe and many other places around the world.

"We already have a United Nations here," he said.

The Dunstan High School boarders' accommodation, used for fruit pickers over the holiday period, is already full, as are the handful of chalets at the motor camps which Mr McPherson has booked to accommodate workers.

He is asking Alexandra residents with spare rooms and who would like to help with accommodation to give him a call.

The workers would pay for the accommodation.

Mr McPherson prefers the accommodation to be right in Alexandra, as the workers who will be coming from overseas are unlikely to have transport and they will need to be picked up by the workers' van each day.

"My experience with the hospitality of the people of Alexandra is such that I know they will be happy to help if they can," he said.

Anyone who can help should call Mr McPherson on 021 879 049.
