Vincent board backs most expensive site

A proposed site for a new wastewater pump facility in Clyde is favoured by the Vincent Community Board.

However, the proposed site is expected to cost about $200,000 more than the other five spots considered.

The pumping station is part of the $13.6 million stage 1 of the Clyde Wastewater Project.

Members discussed six proposed options - all of which were situated at the southern end of Clyde - at last week's board meeting.

The pumping station components comprise fibreglass tanks, a wet well with pumps, power supply infrastructure, an all-weather access-way and a fenced compound to house the control equipment and chemical storage.

The board favoured an unused site around the Clutha River side of the Dunstan Golf Club beside the Clyde Recreation Reserve.

A report by Central Otago District Council property officer Linda Stronach said one of the disadvantages of the recommended site was it would cost about $200,000 more than the other five sites.

However, the board agreed the additional cost was justified as it was the only logical site.

Other options considered were spots along Sunderland St, an area of council land alongside the golf club and an area of council land near Dunstan Hospital.

Ms Stronach said the alternative sites might be visually unacceptable to the golf club and the community.

The other sites could disrupt future land development options, the report said.

Negotiations with the golf club would be the next step in the project.

Ms Stronach said the golf club had strongly opposed one of the site options along Sunderland St during discussions.

Ground testing would also be required to confirm the suitability of the pump site.

Construction is planned to start in winter 2020.
