A truck and trailer unit was badly damaged after a tyre blew out and the unit went on fire on the Pigroot early yesterday morning.

The truck was heading west on State Highway 85, near the Pigroot Creek area, when it was believed a tyre blew out, causing the vehicle to crash.

It then caught fire, causing extensive damage to the front unit, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.

A fire appliance from Ranfurly attended the crash and found the truck well alight when it arrived.

A fire tanker, also from Ranfurly, also attended the crash.

The driver of the truck managed to get out of the truck uninjured and was waiting on the side of the road when the fire appliance arrived.

Police also attended and the road was closed for most of the morning. Road control was still in operation yesterday afternoon.

Contractors were brought in to clear the road, and dragged the truck to the side of the road and managed traffic flow.
