Forty-three years separate the two contenders for the vacant seat on the Vincent Community Board.

Sheree Williams (23), of Clyde, and Brian Fitzgerald (66), of Alexandra, are vying to represent the Vincent ward, a seat left vacant by the resignation of Melanie Bell in May.

Mrs Williams manages her family business, McCrostie Parts and Machinery, based in Alexandra.

She was the youngest candidate in the Central Otago local body elections last year and the highest-polling unsuccessful candidate for the board.

She campaigned under the banner of the Progressive Group at the elections but is ''going solo'' this time.

''It was my first attempt so I wanted the support of being part of that bigger group, but now I know more about the process and I've learned a bit, so I'll be on my own this time and see how it goes,'' she said.

''After missing out on a seat at the elections, I was keen to stand again so was excited to hear about the by-election - this is my opening to try again.''

Mrs Williams was ''born and raised'' in Alexandra and wants to represent the business business sector and youth on the board.

It is Mr Fitzgerald's first foray into local body politics. He is semi-retired and has been involved in business management and investment all his working life, with his most recent role being three years as manager of Central Otago WasteBusters.

He shifted to Alexandra from Gore nine years ago and has taken an active role in the Alexandra Rotary Club.

In Eastern Southland, Mr Fitzgerald was involved in a wide range of organisations and coached junior basketball, including representative teams.

Mr Fitzgerald's nomination as a candidate was prompted by a desire to ''give something back to the community I live in''.

''I feel I've got the time now I'm semi-retired to get my teeth into something new and I like to keep active.''

Miss Bell resigned from the board as she was moving to Christchurch ''for a combination of personal reasons'', she said in May.

She was the youngest member of the board, aged 29 when elected, and the fourth generation of her family to become a local body politician Voting documents for the by-election will be delivered to Alexandra ward residents from August 11 and voting will close at noon on Tuesday, September 2.
