The Gabriel's Gully 150th anniversary gave the descendants of Thomas and Beatrice McMullan the chance to celebrate both the gold rush and their family's heritage.

The reunion began with family stories on Friday night before meeting on Saturday at McMullan Cottage in Gabriel's Gully to see the restored home and share a picnic lunch.

Family member and cottage owner Jeff Barlow and his wife Jenny bought the cottage in 1999 and were faced with a big restoration project.

"The house had been let go - there were possums in the roof and walls, and it leaked."

He said they had lived in the house for eight years without power or flushing toilets, and when they did get them it "took a while to get used to all the noises".

Thomas and Beatrice McMullan were married in 1899 in Albert Town, Otago before settling at Lawrence.

The cottage was later extended to accommodate the couple's eight children.
