Three people were injured — one of whom was helicoptered to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries — after two cars collided at an intersection near Cromwell.
A police spokesman said officers responded to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Sandflat Rd about 12.45pm yesterday.
A St John spokesman said a helicopter and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
A patient with serious injuries was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital and two with minor injuries were transported to Dunstan Hospital, the spokesman said.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two appliances from Cromwell station attended the incident.
No-one was trapped and firefighters assisted St John staff at the scene.
While the crash happened outside the Highlands motorsport park, it was unrelated to the facility, the spokesman said.
A Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency alert said the road was closed and detours were in place until the scene was cleared at about 2.30pm.
