No need to read the book

Bookclubs are a mainstay in many women’s social calendars.

The idea is simple — gathering with like-minded people to discuss a book everyone has read.

However, how many times do members turn up with novel reasons for not actually having done the reading?

The Clyde Theatre Group is bringing The Illiterate Bookclub to the stage next month and the story revolves around a bookclub and the members who do not have time to read the set text but they meet every month anyway.

The bookclub was created by Flora (played by Catherine Brown) who came up with ways to soak up the stories of her favourite books even when there simply was not time to read.

As well as Flora there is Stephanie (played by Rachel O’Connell), a caterer, Joy the lawyer (Caroline Stacey), Zoe the accountant (Kylee Murphy) and the evening’s hostess Ada (Joy Ramsay), whose son, Hamish, will not move out.

There is a new member Maggie (Jackie Smith) attending for the first time, who is on a gap year of sorts from her work and life in Ireland.

Of course, as with any bookclub meeting, the conversation ranges well beyond the books.

Mrs Millis said the cast was a great team and a delight to work with.
