Fletcher Dowling is not letting his 6ft 2in (190cm) frame stand in the way of his chance to play alongside Snow White as a dwarf.

"I knew straight away, when they said Snow White and the Seven Dwarves I had to be a dwarf,'' the taller-than-average 16-year-old said.

The Ranfurly Musical and Dramatic Society pantomime will be brought to the Ranfurly Town Hall stage, starting on August 19.

"It's fun,'' Fletcher said of his chance to play one of the colourful characters.

"Me being a dwarf, I think the whole crowd will get a laugh out of that. It's all in good humour.''

The cast of 27 will also include a local pharmacist as a henchman, a dairy farmer as a prince, a mechanic as a kitchen-hand, a teacher as an evil queen, a mother of five as a fairy, and a full-time Dunedin student as Snow White's friend.

Family members were also helping bring the show to the stage, including a mother and daughter, mother and son, husband and wife, sisters and a father and son.

Snow White will be played by Maniototo Area School pupil Lucy Neilson (15).

Show directors Lucia Dowling and Anne Kirk were grateful to the many people who had stepped forward to help make the show happen, something that could prove a challenge, they said.

However, preparations were now tracking well.

Watching the vast range of local talent on stage was one of the aspects Miss Dowling was looking forward to the most.

Mrs Kirk said cast members varied from people who had been involved in stage productions in the past to those who would be performing for the first time.

The show will take place on August 19, 22, 24 and 25.
