St Bathans postmistress Sharon Hinds died on Tuesday at Dunedin Hospital.
Mrs Hinds was well known for her involvement in heritage issues and protecting the historic values of St Bathans and surrounds.
She was chairwoman of the Central Otago branch of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and was on the St Bathans Heritage and Environment Trust and the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust.
Mrs Hinds was attending an Environment Court hearing in Alexandra on Monday when she became ill.
She was taken to Dunstan Hospital and then Dunedin Hospital and died the next day.
