Singer/songwriter Sue Harris, of Lauder, is so passionate about the branding for Central Otago "A World of Difference" that she wrote a song about it which she performed before Central Otago district councillors at the council meeting in Alexandra on Wednesday. Photo by Diane Brown.
Sue Harris loves Central Otago and she has written a song to prove it.

While many Central Otago residents had gripes and grouches in their resident opinion survey carried out by the Central Otago District Council earlier this year, Ms Harris decided to do something different.

She filled in her form but at the same time wrote a song about the joys of living in Central Otago and related it to the Central Otago brand "A World of Difference".

She added a note at the bottom of her survey form asking the communications team to call her about the song she had written.

The song has several verses covering all the different parts of Central Otago.

The council's communication and branding manager Shirley Howden was "very impressed" when she heard Ms Harris sing the song.

She asked Mayor Malcolm Macpherson if Ms Harris could perform the song for the councillors at their meeting this week, and he agreed.

Councillors were visibly moved by Ms Harris' performance and the words to the song.

Dr Macpherson suggested the song should go on the council's website so Central Otago people living in other parts of the world could download it on their iPods and it would remind them of home.

Ms Howden said after the meeting she had spoken to Ms Harris about recording it for the website but at this stage Ms Harris was not sure if she was ready to do that.

Singing Central's praises
Excerpt from "Central Otago - A World of Difference"
A world of difference the land has to show,
In the small inner region of Central Otago
I was born here, I'm still here, it's now in my blood
The fierce winters, hot summers, or raging flood
There's Clyde, known as Dunstan in olde yesteryear
It sprang into life when the gold rush came here
Alexandra's the town with the clock on the hill
And every September hosts the Blossom Festival
Our awesome rail trail, it's the first in the land
Some sceptics were dubious when it was first planned
