Karate is a family affair for two Cromwell sisters, who are both fighting their way to the top.

Emerson and Megan Douglas both won gold medals in the Otago Southland Karate Championships held in Alexandra earlier this month and together won five championship trophies in the Kman’s Martial Arts Club Championships (KMAC) held in Cromwell last weekend.

Instructor Kman McEvoy said while the sisters had only been training for six months, they had the potential to become world-class competitors.

The girls are fast learners — Megan double graded from white to yellow belt, and Emerson triple graded from white to yellow belt green stripe, in their last belt grading.

"They are so natural and train so hard, they deserve their success."

The sisters’ success had motivated their father Kevin to start training in martial arts at the club with them.

Their parents were both very proud of the girls.

"Cromwell is becoming a great breeding ground for martial arts champions," Mr McEvoy said.

It had been been a huge month for the club’s competitors who collectively won eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals at the Otago Southland Karate Championships in Alexandra, and also won one gold, four silver and one bronze at the International Global Taekwondo Championships in Melbourne.
