Curlers converge for champs

Garion Long (below left), of Auckland, watches as Darcy Nevill, of the Ida Valley, calls the shot during the first day of the National Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, held in Naseby yesterday.

Ten men’s teams and seven women’s teams from across the nation converged on Naseby’s International Indoor Curling Rink for the five-day tournament.

Officiator Nelson Ede said that while Central Otago was well represented, teams from as far away as Auckland were competing.

Competitors ranged in age from high schoolers to those past retirement age.

"It’s a sport that caters for a lot of age groups."

Winners will go on to represent New Zealand at the World Championships later this year.

The competition runs until Sunday.
