Visitors and residents of Central Otago now have a comprehensive guide to the district's rock formations.
Authors Daphne Lee, from the University of Otago, and Jane Forsyth, from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, have co-authored Central Rocks: A guide to the geology and landscapes of Central Otago.
Dr Lee said: "We travelled extensively throughout the region and found all sorts of places we didn't actually know about."
The pair have followed the Clutha River from its source to the sea and looked at all the different rock formations along the way, mapping them and preparing full descriptions that are easy to follow with colour pictures.
There had been a real demand from secondary schools for a definitive book for the area, Dr Lee said.
All primary and secondary schools in Otago would receive a free copy.
