Recycling depot site sparks anger

Some Naseby residents are angry about the new site chosen by the Maniototo Community Board for the Naseby recycling depot.

They want board members to change their decision, but their pleas appear to be in vain.

Board chairman Richard Smith said this week the matter had already been considered twice and the decision to site the depot in Lomond Rd had been made.

The depot will be relocated from its existing site beside the Town Hall.

There had been a complaint from a neighbour about rubbish being left outside the container.

Three residents said at the public forum at this week's board meeting the facility was the only one in the district that would accept bottles and would be very noisy for people living near the new site in Lomond Rd.

"Experience shows that people dispose of glass at any time of the day or night, and it is very noisy," Naseby resident Syd Broadley said.

Mr Broadley said several people he had spoken to believed a site on Channel Rd near the Maniototo International Curling Rink would be more suitable, as there were no houses around that area and the ice rink staff could monitor it.

He listed several other possible sites.

Mr Broadley begged the board to call a public meeting to discuss the issue.

Board member Stuart Duncan asked if the group would be satisfied if the facility was moved further along the street, if that was possible.
