The Alexandra Blossom Festival begins on Monday with an event that celebrates the contribution made by the district's senior residents.

The seven contestants for the title of Senior Blossom Festival Festival Queen are Betty Leask, Jeanie Johnson, Elma McGregor and Elizabeth Golden, Valmai Beeby, Mai Timms and Rae Stewart.

All live in Alexandra.

The winner will be announced at a function on Monday in the Alexandra Community Centre, starting at 2pm.

One of the contest organisers, Pam Love, said it would be the 15th time the senior queen contest had been staged.

The event was started to thank the senior citizens who volunteered for community groups in the town, many of whom contributed to the success of blossom festivals.

"This is one way of giving back to them. We make a fuss of them so they have a special day and they really enjoy the experience."

Last year's winner, Jennifer Bowie, of Alexandra, will be there on Monday to hand over her crown.

The senior queen and the runners-up will be guests of honour during the festival float procession through the town on Saturday next weekend.
