The grown-ups took over the new playground at Goldfields School on Thursday but the children had the last laugh.

A timed challenge around the playground was held to celebrate the opening.

Six teams took part - two teams of pupils, and the rest comprising sports stars, teachers, members of the board of trustees and Friends of the School volunteers.

Each team had to complete a circuit of the playground as a relay, without touching the ground.

The fastest two teams were the pupils, followed by the sports stars.

Principal Sharon Booth said the playground cost about $55,000 and was completed within a few weeks.

Funding was a team effort, with $8000 from the Otago Community Trust, $12,000 from the school's capital work fund, $15,000 from the Friends of the School and the remainder from other fundraising efforts.

Board member Jason Clark said the playground was the second major project within two years.

"The school hall was a big project and together with this playground, it represents an investment of $300,000 that was raised locally throughout the community, which is a big effort."
