Public invited to dam

Clyde's dam and hydro electric power station will be open to the public tomorrow to celebrate 25 years since the filling of Lake Dunstan began.

The filling of the lake began on April 22, 1992 and the station was officially opened on April 23, 1994.

The open day also marks 40 years since project construction began in 1977.

The open day would be the first public open day held since the station opened, Contact Energy Clyde Power Station head of generation Boyd Brinsdon said.

``We decided the 25-year milestone was the perfect excuse to open up and let everyone come in and see how this massive dam turns water into electricity.''

Visitors will be able to take self-guided tours around the station's 60-metre-high dam and powerhouse, including seeing the machines that generate the station's 432 megawatt output - enough electricity to power every home and small business in Otago and Southland.

The open day will run from 10am to 3pm .

Entry is by donation, with all proceeds going back to the community.
