A perfect day for organisers turned into an exceptional day for the overall winner of the annual Lawrence quarter mile sprints on Saturday, in front of about 500 spectators.
Lawrence 1/4 Mile Club president Bill Bazley said conditions were ''perfect'' for the noon to 3pm racing, with 58 entrants in a wide variety of cars from mainly around Otago and Southland.
''There was a well behaved crowd and drivers - perfect all round,'' he said.
Owner driver Eric Eaves, of Gore, became a fourth time winner of the six category event, with his 7.5 litre Ford T Bucket clocking the overall fastest time for the day, at 10.65sec.
The event record of 9.4sec has stood for about a decade.
Mr Bazley said Mr Eaves had in turn donated a trophy for the event, which will be on offer for next year's 25th anniversary, for the fastest street cardriven to the event.
The 58 entries on the day were probably down slightly because of the closeness to the Easter break and the Rod Stewart concert in Dunedin, Mr Bazley said.
