Set in Wānaka the books — Maddison McQueen and the Cupcake Mystery and Maddison McQueen and the Disappearing Dogs — were likely to be enjoyed by a 7-10-year-old, Ms Gordon-Smith said.

Maddison was a sassy version of herself at 10 with a passion for adventure, a curious mind and a love of dogs.

She owns a red and white collie called Kenzie and her rescue dog Snow features in the second book.

The books were full of dog training tips and enough adventure to excite, but not scare, young readers, she said.

In her book, Maddie wanted to be a search and rescue dog handler and a neighbour, who happened to do that for a living, had generously shared their knowledge for the books, Ms Gordon- Smith said.

While her initial intention was to write a romance novel she discovered her heart was not in it.

Her experience as an online children’s book shop owner, and consequent reading of huge amounts for children’s fiction, led her to realise she could bring joy to writing that.

Ms Gordon- Smith has given The Central Otago News a copy of each of the books to give away to a reader. To enter email info@thenews.co.nz, with Book Giveaway in the subject line, before November 18.
