Motorists are still being warned to avoid travel in Central Otago, particularly in the Maniototo, after more snow overnight.
The Central Otago District Council emergency management officer Hamish Keith said roading authorities were having problems keeping road access open, on the state highway and council road network, because of ongoing heavy snowfalls.
Although Alexandra and Cromwell are clear of snow, the Ida Valley and Maniototo received more snow overnight and snow continues to fall today.
Many council roads in that area are closed or open only to 4WD vehicles.
Roading contractors are working around the clock to clear snow, but in country areas, they are only clearing to the last house on roads, so residents can access their homes.
In Naseby, the priority is digging out residents' driveways to their properties. Extreme caution is advised.
More snow fell overnight in St Bathans and the eastern access to the village is closed. It is snowing in the Ida Valley and accessible by 4WD vehicles only.
The hill section of Teviot Rd is being cleared, starting with the Knobby Range Rd and heading towards Beaumont Station Rd. This work could take two days, roading authorities said.
Danseys Pass remains closed until further notice.
Motorists are also warned that there is flooding damage throughout the Central Otago roading network, especially in the Maniototo. Flood damage warning signs have been flattened and buried by snow.
