Just more than 100 entries were received, many young people taking part from schools in Cromwell, Tarras and Alexandra.
Parents and grandparents were also involved.
Although the bike ride was shortened because of the weather, no-one really seemed to mind and there was a great shout of delight as the younger cyclists completed their challenge and rushed inside to get their hot bagels with spreads as a morningtea snack.
Emma Smith (9), from Cromwell, won a new bike. The large bike had her struggling to climb aboard, but road-safety coordinator Jo Robinson said she would organise to swap the bike for a smaller one.
Central Otago Mayor Malcolm Macpherson said he was surprised and delighted by the turnout. It showed the spirit of the people of the district, he said.
