Man drove at 170kmh: police

Speeding remains a concern for Central Otago police, as careless and dangerous driving continues to put people at risk.

Senior Constable Graham Perkins, of Alexandra, said a 24 year-old Australian man was allegedly driving a vehicle recorded travelling 170kmh in the Bendigo area on Wednesday, July 3.

Snr Const Perkins understood the driver and his passengers had stayed in Queenstown overnight and were driving to Christchurch.

"The explanation was they were running late for footy practice in Christchurch," he said.

A witness told police the car had been dangerously overtaking other vehicles and nearly caused a head-on crash.

The vehicle was impounded. The driver would be charged with dangerous driving and was expected to appear in the Alexandra District Court, police said.
