Town bustles for school sports

Millers Flat, where it is possible to have a conversation in the middle of the street most weekends, had a population explosion on Saturday when more than 1000 children, parents, coaches and supporters arrived to play netball, rugby and ripper rugby on fields and courts across the village.

Millers Flat School principal Hilary Spedding said the event, which has been running for 122 years, was the 33-pupil school’s biggest fundraiser.

Teams from Glenorchy to Dunedin and Balclutha competed.

The third generation of competitors played on Saturday watched by their grandparents and parents who had all been on the same courts and fields.

Mrs Spedding said the draw was a mammoth task, undertaken this year by the school office manager Brooke Reichel.

After more than a century, Covid causing the only year missed, the event was a well-oiled machine, she said.

Dozens of Jimmy’s Pies, barbecues, hot chips, coffee and ice creams sustained the visitors, while car parking was squeezed in wherever a space could be found.
